The job looks identical from the outside. Drinks come back, someone deals with them. But the constraints change completely depending on the room, and a routine built for a bar falls apart in a stadium.
Here’s how the same problem behaves across six different environments, and what changes about the answer.
The short version
- The variable that matters is distance to a drain, not volume of drinks.
- Rooms with no plumbing need the station to travel. Rooms with plumbing need it to stay put.
- Public spaces need a station guests will actually notice and use.
- Multi room venues almost always need more stations than they think.
Bars and nightclubs
Highest volume, shortest distance. If there’s a dump sink at the well, most of the problem is already solved.
What still bites is the service end, where glassware comes back from the floor and the sink is behind the bartender working a queue. A station at that end takes the returns without anyone crossing the well. Two locking casters matter here, because a bar is a place where things get knocked.
Restaurants and cafes
Lower drink volume, but a longer path. Glasses travel from table to bus point to dish pit, holding liquid the whole way.
The win is at the bus point. Emptying there means the tub arriving at the dish pit is light and dry, and the walk between them stops being a drip trail across a dining room floor.
Hotels and banquet floors
This is where distance turns into a real cost. A function room has no drain in it. The nearest sink is through a service door, down a corridor, in a kitchen that’s busy with something else.
Coffee breaks are the underestimated part. A conference floor turns over three hundred cups in fifteen minutes, twice a day, all of them holding something. A station in the room means the turnaround happens in the room.
If you run several function rooms at once, one shared station in a corridor means someone is carrying liquid through a corridor. One per room is usually the honest answer.
Catering, mobile bars and food trucks
No plumbing at all, and the room changes every week.
Here the station is part of the kit rather than part of the building. It has to load, roll across whatever surface the venue has, work through the event and empty out at the end without needing a drain nearby. Four swivel casters and a drain plug are doing all the work in this setting.
Teardown is where it pays off. Every event ends with a deadline and a van, and liquid is the thing that slows both.
Stadiums, arenas and cinemas
Huge volume, guests doing the clearing themselves, and staff who can’t leave a counter.
The design question shifts. A station in a back corridor is useless if the cups are on a concourse. It needs to be where people are, and it needs to read as a station from a distance. This is the setting where colour stops being cosmetic. A unit nobody notices gets walked past, and the cup ends up in general waste or on the floor.
Schools, offices and community halls
Lower intensity, but the same structural gap and usually the least equipment.
A cafeteria rush is short and total. A breakroom has a sink but it’s a domestic one that blocks. A church hall has a kitchen at the far end and two hundred cups at the near end. In all three the answer is the same, put the station where the cups are and stop the walk.
The one rule underneath all six
Every one of these comes down to the same measurement. How far is it from where a drink is finished to where its liquid can legitimately go?
If that distance is a step, you don’t need anything. If it’s across a room, through a door, or into another building, that distance is being paid for on every shift by someone walking.
Common questions
How do you keep a drink station clean during service?
Empty at the point of collection rather than carrying liquid somewhere else. Most of what makes a station dirty is transit, not the drinks themselves.
Does the same setup work for a bar and an event?
The unit does, the placement doesn’t. A bar wants it fixed at the service end with the casters locked. An event wants it mobile and repositioned as the room changes.
What about outdoor events?
The constraint outdoors is that there’s no drain at all, so the reservoir capacity and the ability to roll it to wherever the disposal point is matter more than they do indoors.
How many do we need for a multi room venue?
Count the points where drinks come back, not the number of rooms. Any point more than a few steps from a station is generating walking.
Does colour actually matter?
In back of house, no. In a public space, yes. If guests are meant to use it themselves and it blends into the wall, they won’t.
