Stadiums, Arenas and Cinemas

In most venues, staff clear the drinks. In a stadium, arena or cinema, the guest does it, and that changes the entire problem.

You aren’t designing a workflow for trained people who’ll follow a routine. You’re designing for thirty thousand strangers making a two-second decision on their way somewhere else.

The short version

  • Guests clear their own cups, so the station has to be found without being explained.

The interval problem

Concourse volume isn’t distributed. It arrives in two or three surges of a few minutes each, and nothing much happens in between.

At the whistle, several thousand people move at once. They’re carrying cups that are part full, because they left when the queue for the toilets was shortest, not when their drink was finished. Two minutes later the concourse has to be walkable again.

Anything that requires a staff member to intervene fails in that window. There is no staff member free. The only thing that works at that scale is a station guests use themselves, positioned where they already walk.

Why placement beats everything else

A station in a back corridor is useless if the cups are on the concourse.

The useful spots are the ones people pass anyway. Before the tunnel back to the seats. Beside the toilet entrances, because that’s where people put a drink down. At the top of an escalator. Near the exit doors for the end-of-event surge.

The test is whether someone would find it without looking for it. If a guest has to search, they’ll use the nearest general waste bin instead, and you’ve got liquid in a liner and a wet floor at the bottom of a stairwell.

Colour is the functional decision here

Everywhere else this is cosmetic. In a stadium it’s the difference between a station that works and one that doesn’t.

The Beverage Bin comes in Black, Blue, Red, Green and Yellow. On a concourse, a dark unit against a dark wall disappears into the background at exactly the moment you need it seen. A bright unit reads as a station from twenty metres, which is how far ahead people decide where they’re walking.

Some venues use colour to separate liquid from general waste at a glance, which is the fastest instruction you can give a crowd without signage.

Cinemas are the same problem, quieter

A cinema empties an auditorium in ninety seconds. Everyone comes out holding a large cup with ice still in it, and the next audience is already queuing.

The turnaround team has minutes to clear a room. Anything they carry out holding liquid drips through the foyer. A station at the auditorium exit means the cup is dealt with before it travels, and the auditorium clean is dry waste only.

What the unit does

Two compartments with a fixed perforated HDPE separator. Solids stay on top, cups, lids, straws and ice. Liquid drains into a lower reservoir holding up to 21 gallons.

That capacity matters more here than in most settings, because the surge is the point. A station that fills mid-interval and needs attention is a station that fails when it counts. The transparent Liquid Level Reader on the front lets a supervisor check the level on a walk-past rather than opening anything.

Emptying doesn’t need a lift. Roll it on four swivel casters to the disposal point, twist the drain plug at the base of the narrow end, gravity does the rest. Two casters lock, which matters on a sloped concourse.

The body is heavy-duty industrial-grade HDPE, chosen for impact resistance, which is relevant in a space where a unit gets knocked by crowds rather than handled by staff.

How many, and where

Count traffic points, not square footage.

A concourse level typically wants one per tunnel entrance plus one near each toilet block and one by the exit. A multi-tier arena repeats that per level. A cinema wants one per auditorium exit and one in the foyer.

That adds up quickly, which is what the 3-Pack, 6-Pack and 12-Pack are for. Identical units, identical dimensions, bought in the quantity a level actually needs.

Common questions

Will guests actually use it?

They use it if they see it without looking. Placement on the walking route and a colour that stands out against the wall are what decide this, not signage.

What happens during a surge?

The lower reservoir holds up to 21 gallons, and the Liquid Level Reader means staff can check the level between surges rather than during one.

Does it survive a crowd?

The body is heavy-duty industrial-grade HDPE picked for impact resistance, and two of the four casters lock so it stays where it was placed.

How do staff empty it mid-event?

Roll it to the disposal point and open the drain plug. It empties where it stands, so it doesn’t need to be carried through a crowd.

What colour works best on a concourse?

A bright one. Black works front of house in hotels, but on a concourse it disappears against the wall at the moment it needs to be spotted.

Does the same apply to cinemas?

Yes, on a shorter cycle. The auditorium exit is the equivalent of the tunnel entrance, and the goal is the same, deal with the cup before it travels through the foyer.
